Five men have been arrested in Bulawayo for allegedly carrying out a string of violent armed robberies in Killarney suburb, using machetes, knives, and medieval-style axes to terrorise residents.

The suspects, Mpho Ncube (26), Thabani Zondo (25), Thembalami Sibanda (25), Ashton Ncube (22), and Shelton Ngwenya (24), all from Pumula suburb, appeared in court on Thursday facing six counts of robbery and one count of malicious damage to property.

They were remanded in custody to 15 August by Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Sibonginkosi Mnkandla. The group is being represented by defence lawyer Tinashe Runganga of Tanaka Law Chambers.

Prosecutor Owen Mugari told the court that the gang’s crime spree began on 30 July along Coghlan Road, where they allegedly damaged a Honda Fit vehicle belonging to one of the complainants.

“On the same day, the accused attacked a man with machetes and a Colombian knife, threatening to kill him before stealing his phone,” said Mugari.

The gang is also accused of robbing several other victims, taking mobile phones, chargers, and cash. In one case, they allegedly stripped a complainant of his blue and yellow hooded jacket after threatening him with deadly weapons.
