Zim sets Covid-19 single-day death record

Zimbabwe has recorded its highest number of single-day Covid-19 deaths after 38 people succumbed to the deadly pandemic, Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 589. 

Twenty of the deaths were recorded in Harare, the Ministry of Health and Care said in a statement.

Bulawayo recorded 5 deaths, Manicaland 8, Masvingo had 3 fatalities while Midlands and Mashonaland Central recorded one death each.

The country also recorded 1017 new cases in the last 24 hours. 

The statement noted that all the recorded new cases are local transmissions.

”1017 new cases and 38 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours. All the cases are local transmissions. Of the total, the highest number of new cases was recorded in Harare (419). Bulawayo recorded a total of 53 new cases,” read the statement.

“A total of 3507 PCR tests were conducted with a positivity rate of 29%. National Recovery rate stands at 56.3% after a total of 262 recoveries was recorded. There are a total of 10009 active cases to date.”

The country, as of January 13, 2021, has recorded a total of 24256 cases, 13658 recoveries and 589 deaths.
