Elderly couple seeks help after fire destroys two huts

A family in Sababa village, Ward 5, Insiza South, is pleading for help to restore their home after two of their huts were destroyed by fire.

The incident occurred last week.

According to reports, neighbours noticed the fire around six in the evening and attempted to put it out, but they were unsuccessful due to strong winds.

Speaking to CITE, Ward 5 Councillor Ngobe Masonga stated that the source of the fire was unknown and that the elders had gone to church for evening prayer when it occurred.

“Since two juveniles were present and unable to explain, the cause of the fire is unknown,” said Masonga.

It is reported that when the neighbours attempted to extinguish the fire, the wind carried the flames, causing another hut, roughly 15 meters away, to catch fire as well.

The councillor explained that these two huts were used to store food and property, leaving the family with nothing.

Masonga disclosed to CITE that the homeowners are elderly, in their 80s, and need assistance rebuilding as they cannot manage independently.

“We would appreciate it if people could donate food and building materials because these people are elderly and will not be able to rebuild on their own,” he said.

He continued, urging villagers to be careful and to encourage children not to play with fire.

“We encourage everyone to be careful, especially children because fire destroys not only homes but also the bush, which affects animals during this dry season,” he said.
