The Victoria Falls Municipality has elevated to alderman status former Victoria Falls mayor Nkosilathi Jiyane.

The conferment was announced by the Chamber Secretary Kholwani Mangena who said Jiyane has worked tirelessly in serving the town.

He served as councillor from 2001 to 2008 before his ascension to the mayoral position in 2008 to 2013 where he chaired the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly held in Victoria Falls.

For one to be bestowed with the position of Alderman, they should have served the local authority for eight years for mayors and 10 years for councillors.

“So from time to time, the alderman or the alderwoman attend community engagements and they are also part of the civil ceremonies,”Mangena explained their role.

“While the role of the Alderman is one of the civic honours that the council can give a person, there are really no financial benefits to it. The role is merely symbolic. It does not come with allowances and it cannot be passed on or inherited.”

The ceremony was witnessed by Victoria Falls mayor Somveli Dlamini and the Town Clerk Ronnie Dube.
