Artificial intelligence experts have called for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the education sector as it is a transformative tool in teaching and learning.

This development promises to reshape the educational landscape, making learning more personalised and efficient.

Speaking at a three-day AI conference held at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Primary and Secondary Education ministry education director Lawrence Mkwala said that AI is more than just a technological advancement—it’s a crucial force that has the potential to enrich personalised learning, streamline educational processes, and provide valuable insights within Zimbabwe’s education system.

“AI has the potential to revolutionise the way we learn and teach, which is why it is critical to the education system in Zimbabwe. AI allows for more personalised engagement among students and enhances the efficiency of the learning process,” Mkwala stated.

He further explained that AI technologies, such as natural language processing, enable students to learn at their own pace and in ways that align with their individual learning styles. This approach is paving the way for a more student-centered education system that caters to each learner’s unique needs.

“AI not only enriches knowledge but also fosters innovation and entrepreneurship among students. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, we can help students develop new skills that are crucial for their future careers,” Mkwala added.

Mkwala also underscored the importance of using AI to address existing disparities within the education system.

“As we explore AI-driven solutions, we must ensure these technologies bridge gaps within our education system. The integration of AI in our schools is a pivotal step towards achieving this vision. By equipping our students with AI skills, we are laying the groundwork for a technologically advanced society,” he emphasized.

Victoria Nxumalo, founder of Girls in STEM, said there is a need for a more transformative approach to education through the integration of AI. She highlighted that AI is not merely a tool but a driving force capable of enhancing student learning and providing real-time insights into their progress.

“By integrating AI into our education system, we can move beyond traditional teaching methods to create a dynamic and responsive learning environment,” Nxumalo said.

She also spoke about AI’s potential to empower learners in unprecedented ways.

“With AI, we can produce graduates who are not just job seekers but job creators. By equipping our students with AI skills, we are preparing them not only to participate in the global economy but to lead it,” she added.
