Duo impersonating cops held

TWO security guards from Bulawayo’s Pumula South suburb have been arrested for impersonating police officers and soliciting a bribe from a complainant for not wearing a face mask in public.

The two accused persons are Mduduzi Dube aged 31 years and Daniel Ncube aged 29 years .

The incident occurred on June 26 at the Centenary Park.

Bulawayo Police Spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and said the two are set to appear in court soon.

“They are both employed by Security Services in Pumula South, Bulawayo. The two are facing a charge of impersonating police officers which occurred on the 26th of June 2021 at Centenary Park in Bulawayo,” said Inspector Ncube.

He said the complainant was approached by the duo and was asked why he was not wearing his face mask.

“One of the accused people showed the complainant some handcuffs and advised him that he was under arrest for not wearing a mask,” said Inspector Ncube.

He added that “The two accused persons then asked the complainant how much money he had and he offered to give them R100.”

Inspector Ncube said genuine police officers from the cycle patrol unit approached them and the complainant narrated his story.

“The accused persons were later arrested after failing to identify themselves as police officers,” he said.

Inspector Ncube said the arrest of yet another team of criminals acting as police officers was tarnishing the organisation’s image.

“We call upon members of the public to agree to go with arresting officers to the police station to finalise legal processes. This will give criminals limited grounding of extorting some monies from them,” he said.
