Highlanders Football Club joined the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) in the ongoing clean-up campaign on Wednesday as efforts to clean the city which was once dubbed southern Africa’s cleanest city but is now an eyesore.

This week, BCC launched its annual week-long clean-up campaign called the “Big Spring Clean Up” as it seeks to rid the city of litter and restore Bulawayo’s previous reputation as the cleanest city in the region.

As part of the clean-up, Premiership team players and executives ‘scrubbed’ the area around their club headquarters on Robert Mugabe Avenue between 3rd and 4th Avenue.

Highlanders Communications Marketing Officer, Nozibelo Maphosa, told CITE that the team thought it was prudent to contribute to the city’s cleanliness and encouraged other citizens to do the same.

“Highlanders want to applaud the initiative taken by the Bulawayo Mayor, David Coltart, to conduct a clean-up of the city. The state of hygiene in Bulawayo has been unpleasant for a long time, and it’s actually motivating to see residents coming together in support of the clean-up campaign. As Highlanders, which commands a huge following of fans, we also urge more people to partake in the campaign because this is our beloved city,” Maphosa said.

Maphosa said it was their wish to see more people and organisations coming out to partake in this clean up campaign.

“On the same footing. people must avoid littering. Our office is near the market, which is one of the hot spots as far as uncleanliness of the city is concerned and affects us a lot because we pass by the market  now and again. We hope the market area will be given a lot of attention so that it is clean,”she added.

One of the female players under Highlanders Royal , Tadiwanashe Masanganise, concurred it was rewarding to be part of the city’s cleaning campaigns.

“I am happy that we are cleaning the city and I also encourage others to join us and to always be clean,” she said.
