ZACRAS advocates for inclusive approach to gender equality and women empowerment

By Community Podium

The Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations (ZACRAS) has appealed for a stakeholder approach in the prioritisation of gender equality and women empowerment.

In a statement released to commemorate 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, ZACRAS said gender equality and women’s empowerment are fundamental principles in shaping the country’s collective progressive effort.

“We call upon all stakeholders, including community radio stations, civil society organisations, and government bodies to unite and prioritise gender equality and empowerment of women. Through collective  effort and sustained engagement, we can  create a more inclusive  and equitable  media landscape that reflects the diverse  voices and experiences of women in Zimbabwe.”

The organisation said the 16 Days of Activism against GBV presents a powerful platform for communities to utilise community radio stations to raise awareness, challenge GBV and advocate for women’s rights which in turn will foster social change, particularly in addressing gender inequalities and promoting women’s empowerment.

16 days of activism against (GBV) run between 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and 10 December (Human Rights Day). This year’s commemorations are being held under the theme: “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls.”

According to the United Nations globally, an estimated 736 million women-almost one in three-have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their life (30 per cent of women aged 15 and older).
