A driver from the Stallion Cruise Bus Company fatally hit three men on a bicycle after allegedly failing to negotiate a curve along the Binga-Cross Dete road near Bunsiwa Church of Christ in Binga.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda, confirmed the incident that occurred on Friday.
Insp Banda reported that cyclist Manguzo Munkombwe (22) was riding his bicycle with two passengers, Oolaswebo Chuma (20) and Wellington Munsaka (21), travelling from Siachilaba to Siansundu.
He said the bus driver, Liberty Makombe (41), failed to negotiate a curve and hit the bicycle on the right side of the road.
“On June 21, 2024, around 7 PM, a fatal road traffic accident occurred along the Binga-Cross Dete road near Bunsiwa Church of Christ, Binga, where Munkombwe, a cyclist, and his two passengers died on the spot,” he said.
“Makombe was driving a Stallion Cruise bus, registration number AEZ 7188, along the Binga-Cross Dete road towards Binga with twenty-two passengers on board. Upon reaching a curve near Bunsiwa Church of Christ, Binga, he encountered Munkombwe, who was cycling on the right side of the road with two passengers from Siachilaba to Siansundu.”
Insp Banda added, “Makombe failed to negotiate the curve and hit the bicycle on the right side of the road. As a result of the accident, the bus sustained deformed frontal damage, while Munkombwe and the two passengers died on the spot.”
