Community patrols pay off: Byo sees drop in crime rates

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has applauded the significant role of neighbourhood watch committees in the fight against crime, leading to a notable reduction in criminal cases in several Bulawayo neighborhoods.
Specifically, areas within the ZRP Hillside police station’s jurisdiction, such as Burnside, Hillside, Matsheumhlophe, and Mqabuko Heights, have witnessed a decrease in crime thanks to the active involvement of their respective neighbourhood watch committees.
“I am reliably informed that since the establishment of the Whitestone and Mqabuko Heights Neighbourhood Watch initiative in January 2022, the community has been relentless in its pursuit of eradicating crime in the area,” stated Officer Commanding Police for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Wiklef Makamache, during the official handover of a dedicated patrol vehicle to the police, purchased by the Whitestone and Mqabuko Heights Neighbourhood Watch Committee.
To substantiate this claim, Officer Makamache presented ZRP Hillside crime statistics revealing a consistent downward trend: 2021: 1762 cases; 2022: 1705 cases (3.235% decrease) and 2023: 1578 cases (10.44% decrease).
This marked the third such vehicle donation, following similar contributions from neighbourhood watch committees in Burnside and Matsheumhlophe last year.
“Such partnerships between the police and communities are crucial in reducing crime throughout the city,” emphasised Commissioner Makamache.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Makamache also urged communities to assist police in the fight against drug abuse.
“As you go about your daily routine, individual citizens are encouraged to take note and be geared to anonymously pass information that may assist police to arrest and prosecute criminals. You can do so by approaching or calling the Officer in Charge of your local police station and then have a confidential conversation,” he pleaded.
