Chief Khumalo urges Bubi miners to rehabilitate Nkayi Road
The President of the Chiefs’ Council, Chief Mtshane Khumalo, has challenged miners and mining companies in Bubi District to come together and take ownership of the rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Nkayi Road.
He made these remarks during the commissioning of the Inyathi High Density Location Emergency Water Supply Project, which was implemented by the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints.
The rehabilitation of the 155-kilometer road linking Bulawayo and Nkayi Center in Matabeleland North began in 1993 and was scheduled for completion in 1999. However, the road remains unfinished.
During the handover ceremony, Chief Mtshane challenged miners and companies in the area to take responsibility for the Nkayi Road rehabilitation project.
“When you are earning substantial income from the mines and can’t even allocate a small amount of money each month or establish a fund to rehabilitate the road,” he said.
Chief Mtshane emphasised that the community has the power and the responsibility to work together to improve the road conditions.
“Let’s make a collective effort to raise funds for road rehabilitation,” he said. “If you do succeed, please let me know so that I can contribute $1,000 as well.”
He also urged councillors to maintain their commitment by continuing to fundraise and contribute to development projects in their wards.
“This will demonstrate their dedication to serving the community and will increase their chances of re-election in 2028,” he said. “As a community, we should also support these initiatives.”
