Catholic Bishops condemn ‘ugly vices’ and call for peace as SADC Summit nears

The Zimbabwe Catholic Bishopsโ€™ Conference (ZCBC) has voiced grave concerns over the prevailing climate of repression in the country, saying the violence, torture, and abductions as tools to silence dissent was a direct violation of Zimbabweโ€™s Constitution.

The Catholic Bishops said the prevailing situation ahead of the 44th Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Heads of States meeting on August 17, 2024, โ€œdoes no one any good.โ€

In a strongly worded statement released on Friday, the ZCBC condemned the resurgence of violence, torture, and abductions as tools to silence dissent in the country, calling these actions a direct violation of the democratic principles and human dignity enshrined in Zimbabwe’s Constitution.

The Bishops emphasised that the prevailing climate of repression, marked by arbitrary arrests and denial of bail for citizens facing frivolous charges, contradicts the core values of freedom of speech and association.

They expressed deep sadness and concern that, in a country with a rich tradition of tolerance and respect for diversity, such repressive tactics are being used instead of engaging in meaningful dialogue with those who are aggrieved by the current state of affairs.

Referencing the Scriptures, the Bishops urged both the government and citizens to reject evil and cling to what is good, as articulated in Romans 12:9.

They implored the government to exercise restraint and urged all Zimbabweans to exercise their rights responsibly, warning that the current situation benefits no one and only serves to deepen divisions within the nation.

The ZCBC also reminded politicians and government officials of their heavy responsibilities, citing the biblical principle that โ€œTo whom much is given; much will be requiredโ€ (Luke 12:48).

They called on leaders to use their positions of influence to unite the people of Zimbabwe, including those who may disagree with their decisions and policies. The Bishops underscored the importance of professionalism in law enforcement, insisting that investigations should precede arrests, not the other way around, as has been the disturbing trend in recent months.

As the country prepares to host the SADC summit, the ZCBC urged the government to make sure that the event does not become a catalyst for further repression. They called on law enforcers to carry out their duties with integrity, ensuring that any action taken is in line with the principles of justice and the rule of law.

The Bishops emphasised the need for peace, justice, and unity to be the guiding principles under which the nation operates, particularly during such a crucial time.

In their concluding remarks, the Bishops offered a prayer for Zimbabwe, asking that the country be guided by principles of harmony, mutual respect, and adherence to the sacred Constitution.

They expressed hope that Zimbabweans would not allow evil to overcome them but would instead work together to build a peaceful and just society where human rights are respected and upheld.
