A woman in Bulawayo’s Gwabalanda suburb was robbed of more than US$14000 after two masked men broke into her home on Wednesday evening.

The 30-year-old woman was with her 17-year-old niece when the suspects, wearing balaclavas, entered the house through an unlocked door.

Bulawayo Police Deputy Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, confirmed the incident.

“On August 27, 2025 at around 2000 hours, the complainant, a female adult aged 30 of Gwabalanda, was sitting in her dining room together with her niece aged 17 when the two unknown accused persons entered the house through an unlocked door putting on balaclavas,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.

“They produced an unknown object, grabbed the complainant’s niece by the neck ordering her to go and collect all the cash that was in the house. They force-marched her to her aunt’s bedroom where she took a purse containing cash amounting to US$10000 which she handed over to them.”

The suspects left with the money but returned minutes later, demanding more.

“After a few minutes, the accused persons came back and demanded more cash, stating that the cash they were given was much less than what they had been sent to get from the complainant. The complainant then surrendered another purse containing cash amounting to US$4000,” Asst Insp Ndlovu said.

She added that the robbers also took a 50-inch Samsung television set before fleeing. They allegedly warned the woman they would return if the money was less than US$20000.

The total value of the stolen property is US$14400. No arrests have been made and nothing has been recovered.

Asst Insp Ndlovu urged members of the public to avoid keeping large sums of money at home.

“She also encouraged residents not to disclose details of their finances to anyone, as no one can be trusted,” police said.
