Bulawayo hospitals cry for help: Water woes, traffic hazards, and stray dogs top the list

Various hospitals in Bulawayo have urged the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) to enhance service delivery within the healthcare institutions.

This plea emerged during the Mayor’s end-of-year annual visit to several hospitals in the city.

The Mayor Councillor David Coltart in the company of BCC Corporate Communications Manager Nesisaย Mpofu, Directorย Healthย Sevicesย Drย Edwin Sibandaย Mzingwaneย andย Councillorย Ntombizodwa Khumalo toured Ingutsheni, Materdei, Mpilo and Cure Hospitals

The Programs Manager from Cure Childrenโ€™s Hospital of Zimbabwe, Martinย Chipimoย appealedย for traffic lights along the road leading to the hospital to curb accidents.

โ€œWeย haveย had aย zebra crossing that was put there andย that wasย okay but if we look at the speed at which cars move on the main road, we need traffic lights.ย We had requested speedย humps,ย but we were advised thatย it’sย a main road,โ€ saidย Chipimo.ย ย

Meanwhile, theย Principal Nursing Officer at Mpilo Hospital, Phineas Sithole said the referral faces intermittent water challenges.ย

Sithole said they also have a challenge of refuse collection.

โ€œWe also have another problem, refuseย collection, weย have accumulating garbageย on the other side. They usedย to collectย nearlyย every dayย but nowย it’sย twice a weekย or once a week,โ€ heย said.ย

Sitholeย alsoย requestedย the local authority to spray breeding spaces for mosquitoes.

Another challenge the hospital faced was that of stray dogs which were causing havoc in the hospital.

Responding to the matter,ย Dr Edwin Sibandaย Mzingwaneย said the local authority has not been able to do a tie-up order for stray dogs as the city has been in an election mode.ย

โ€œFor dogs, we tend to deal withย SPCA butย because we have been perpetually in an election mode, it has notย been palatable for us toย do what we callย tie-up order. We lastย had aย tie-upย order threeย years ago.ย Generally,ย city wide we have many stray dogs,โ€ he said.ย

Meanwhile, Bulawayo Mayor David Coltartย said theย local authority needed to get anย understanding ofย the challenges faced by healthย institutionsย in the city.ย

โ€œTo get anย understanding ofย health institutions in the city,ย obviouslyย weย don’tย controlย them butย we needed to find out what the problemsย areย and we needed to understand what the city can doย to assist.ย We started atย Engutsheni,ย Materdei, Cureย Zimbabweย and weย ended up atย Mpilo Hospital.ย Ingutsheniย was very worrying, the exception ward, the Khumalo ward which asย of today has 159 patientsย did not have any water and noย anti-psychoticย drugsย and they face a realย catastrophe, so my staff and I need to look atย what we can do to deliver water, to make sure that they have water and to raise the plight of that hospitalย and take it up,โ€ he said.ย

โ€œMaterdeiย is veryย encouraging because they areย buildingย a new facility to a hospital as an inspiration and Mpilo is doing remarkably well in theย circumstancesย but they also raised issues for example water deliveryย and refuseย collection.โ€ย
