Bulawayo gears up for week-long celebration of culture and heritage

Bulawayo is abuzz with excitement as it prepares for the upcoming Bulawayo Day and Arts Festival, a week-long extravaganza kicking off on June 1.

Nesisa Mpofu, the City of Bulawayo’s Corporate Communications Manager, expressed her enthusiasm: “We’re in the final stages of preparation, and this year’s festival promises to be bigger and better than ever before.”

The festivities kick off with Bulawayo Day, marking 130 years since the city’s founding. “It’s a chance to celebrate Bulawayo’s rich history and unique identity,” Mpofu explained. A lively street parade, celebrations of World Bicycle Day, and a concert featuring legendary local artists (“KoNtuthu Legends”) will set the festive tone.

Throughout the week, the Bulawayo Arts Festival (BAF) takes centre stage. “The BAF is a showcase of Bulawayo’s vibrant arts scene,” Mpofu said. “From June 2nd to 5th, the city will come alive with music, theatre, dance, and cultural exhibitions. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

Beyond entertainment, the festival offers opportunities for learning and participation. School children will showcase their cultural heritage, while workshops on dance and cultural preservation will foster artistic growth.

The festival culminates with the Imbokodo Concert, a celebration of female artists.

“The Imbokodo Concert is a powerful tribute to the talented women who contribute so much to Bulawayo’s cultural landscape,” Mpofu remarked.

The Bulawayo Day and Arts Festival isn’t just about fun and games. “It’s also a strategic opportunity to showcase Bulawayo’s cultural riches to the world,” Mpofu explained. “We hope to attract tourists and promote Bulawayo as a cultural hub.”

The festival aligns with national development strategies and international agendas promoting cultural sustainability. “We believe that arts and culture play a vital role in economic development,” Mpofu said. “The festival creates opportunities for local businesses, artists, and artisans to thrive.”
