Accountability Lab Zim, Magamba Network launch film fellowship

Accountability Lab Zimbabwe in partnership with Magamba Network yesterday launched a film fellowship programme which aims at developing local filmmakers.

The fellowship which targets young people between the ages of 18-35 seeks to give them an opportunity to gain skills in film making, storytelling and broadening their understanding of integrity and accountability.

The programe is part of the Arts4Change component of the New Narratives for Accountability in Zimbabwe (NNAZ) Project, a joint initiative of Accountability Lab Zimbabwe, Magamba Network and Kubatana Trust of Zimbabwe.

The Arts4Change project focuses on the use of creative activism especially through music, film and comedy to promote dialogue on social justice, accountability and integrity.

Speaking during the virtual launch on Friday, the Film Fellowship Project Officer Dexter Fundire said the ideal candidates for the fellowship are for those who want to tell stories to challenge society to make a difference.

โ€œWe are especially interested in recruiting young women and persons who are differently-abled. This is an opportunity for those perspectives on accountability and governance to be seen and heard. The ideal candidate for this opportunity is conscious of social accountability issues in their communities, and wants to tell stories to challenge our society to make a change,โ€ said Fundire.

He said fellows will receive training in social justice and accountability, scriptwriting, cinematography, editing, impact filmmaking, marketing and distribution.

โ€œFellows will also be mentored and coached by industry experts. During the program, fellows will be required to make at least one short film/ documentary, and will have a chance to work on other film projects on associated AL Zimbabwe work,โ€ said Fundire.

In addition, he said fellows will also be supported with basic equipment and editing tools as well as the necessary support to access and use the internet, travel to and from activities and events.

Applications for the fellowship are now open and the deadline is 31 October 2020.
