Sotsha Moyo in bid to revive Kalanga language, culture through music

Popular Black Umfolosi frontman and Isicithamiya musician, Sotsha Moyo, has embarked on a mission to revive and promote the Kalanga language and culture through music.

As part of the programme, Moyo, will this December hold a Kalanga Music Concert at Still Waters Bottle store in Plumtree on December 24.

In an interview with CITE, Moyo said the concert is a way of giving back to the community that supported his musical journey.

“The concert will be in my mother language, Kalanga. I feel the language died a long time ago due to colonisation and exclusion from the education system.

“As a musician from Bukalanga I see it fair to contribute to the revival of my language, especially now that the constitution of Zimbabwe has declared all languages equal,” said Moyo.

“Having toured the world on musical tours I have decided to stage a celebratory show with my villagers as thanksgiving and celebration of my journey in music and blending it with the revival of my Kalanga culture and language through music and dance.”

He said he will also take the opportunity to launch his sixth solo album in front of his own people.

“The concept will also give me time to introduce my sixth album Lunyalalo, it comes after the following solo projects: Dbilani (2004), Babakidzani (2006), Tjaba Tjangu (2008), Lebani lebeswa (2012) and Mabuyani (2018). All about issues that are very dear to me, responding to local situations, spirit of neighbourliness and nationhood,” said the Moyo.

Moyo said the show will provide a platform for both the young and old musicians to showcase their talent.

“These kind of shows and activities involve the young and old musicians who understand the value of embracing one’s culture,” he said.

Some of the musicians who are set to grace the concert include Plus Nlenje dance crew and  Mkhushulwa  Mtwanedlozi.
