Byo man arrested over 2023 Silobela murder of security guard

Police in Bulawayo have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of a security guard during an armed robbery at a service station in Silobela in June 2023.

The suspect, identified as Makhosini Mathobela, also known as Talent or Khiwa, was arrested in Old Magwegwe, Bulawayo, on October 7, 2026, following a tip-off from members of the public.

Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the arrest, identifying the victim as Josiah Chidoma, who was working as a security guard at the time of the incident.

Msebele said the incident occurred at around 1am on June 14, 2023, when three men allegedly posing as customers looking for fuel ambushed Chidoma and a fuel attendant.

The suspects allegedly produced pistols and grabbed the fuel attendant, demanding money.

The attendant handed over the cash she had, while Chidoma, who was armed with a revolver, observed the robbery from another office and attempted to intervene.

“One of the accused persons shot him directly in the chest, and he died on the spot,” Msebele said.

The suspects reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, prompting a police report.

Msebele said police received information on October 7, 2026  that Mathobela was in Old Magwegwe, leading to his arrest.

“We appreciate members of the public for supplying information that led to the arrest of the accused persons. Members of the public are warned that crime does not pay and there is no hiding place for criminals as the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with you,” she said.
