18 injured in head-on crash near Bulawayo, police say

Bulawayo police have confirmed that 18 people were injured in a head-on collision involving a Mazda Tribute and a Toyota Hiace along the Harare-Bulawayo Road near the Killarney turn-off on Monday morning.

The accident occurred at around 8:15AM, leaving the Toyota Hiace driver and all 17 passengers on board with serious injuries.

Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said investigations indicate that excessive speed and an overtaking error by the Mazda driver caused the crash.

“Police in Bulawayo confirm receiving a case of a serious road traffic accident which occurred along the Harare-Bulawayo Road at the Killarney turn-off, Bulawayo, where 17 passengers and a driver were injured,” said Inspector Msebele.

She said the Mazda Tribute was being driven by Shepherd Makwari (40) who was travelling eastwards with one passenger on board when it crossed into the lane of oncoming traffic.

“On June 8, 2026, at around 0815 hours, Shepherd Makwari, a male adult aged 40 years of Duncan Suburbs, Bulawayo, was driving a Mazda Tribute due east with one passenger on board,” Insp Msebele said.

“He encroached on the incoming lane and had a head-on collision with a Toyota Hiace driven by a 26-year-old male adult of Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, who was travelling in the opposite direction with 17 passengers on board.”

Insp Msebele said the impact left the Toyota Hiace driver and all 17 passengers with various serious injuries and emergency services rushed the victims to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment.

She urged motorists to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution when overtaking.

“Police urge motorists to avoid speeding when driving, always obey speed limits, remain alert and always exercise extreme caution when overtaking on the roads,” said Insp Msebele.
