What is the EcoCash Super App?

EcoCash, Zimbabwe’s biggest mobile money platform, has launched what it calls a “Super App”, a single mobile application that combines three things that used to live in separate apps: making payments, chatting with friends and family, and discovering content and services.

It was developed by Sasai Fintech (a business of Cassava Technologies), and the company describes it as Zimbabwe’s, and indeed Africa’s, first all-in-one social payments app. In simple terms, it is the EcoCash mobile wallet you already know, but with WhatsApp-style chat, a social feed, and tools for sending and receiving money built directly into the conversations and posts you’re already engaging with.

The EcoCash Super App lets you transact, chat and explore all without leaving the app.

The three pillars: Transact, Chat, Explore

The Super App is built around three main tabs. Knowing what each one is for is the easiest way to find your way around.

1. Transact

This is the familiar EcoCash wallet. From here you can:

  • Send and receive money instantly.
  • Pay at shops and vendors using QR codes.
  • Pay bills, electricity (ZESA), water, DStv and other subscriptions, school fees and church offerings.
  • Buy airtime and data bundles.
  • Track your transactions and balance in real time.

2. Chat

A built-in messaging space, similar to WhatsApp, but with money tools baked in. You can hold normal conversations, but you can also send, receive, request or split money inside the same chat, no jumping between apps, no screenshots of confirmation messages.

3. Explore

A social feed and discovery hub. Creators (musicians, comedians, educators, influencers, small businesses) post content here, and audiences can engage with it and pay them directly. It’s also where you’ll find features like Donate, Request Payment and Tips.

Key features at a glance

Social payments inside chat

You can pay or be paid right inside a conversation. If you’re chatting about a taxi, a meal or a contribution, you settle the money in that same chat thread. No screenshots, no app-switching.

Bill splitting

When friends or family share an expense, dinner, transport, a group gift, funeral contributions, a school run, the app can automatically work out each person’s share and send them a payment prompt inside the chat. Each person taps to pay their portion, and the chat keeps everyone on the same page.

Donate

Found in the Explore tab. It lets you ask your network or audience to chip in for a cause, a charity, a community project, or a personal need like medical bills. Supporters can contribute directly from their EcoCash wallet.

Request Payment

Instead of telling someone what to send and waiting, you can send a request for a specific amount. They tap once and the money moves from their wallet to yours. Useful for urgent expenses or settling small obligations quickly.

Tips

A social-style feature where users share short, helpful tips, DIY hacks, life advice, motivational thoughts, faith-based teachings, and others can engage with and support the creator.

Content monetisation for creators

Creators on the Explore feed can earn money directly through their posts, no middleman, no separate payout platform. EcoCash says this is aimed at Zimbabwe’s growing community of musicians, comedians, digital educators, influencers and small business operators.

Everyday transactions, one tap away

Merchant payments, bill payments, airtime and data are also woven into the social feed, so common errands take just one tap.

Getting started: a step-by-step overview

Step 1 — Download the app

  1. On Android: open the Google Play Store and search for “EcoCash Mobile App”.
  2. On iPhone: open the App Store and search for “EcoCash Zimbabwe”.
  3. Install the app and open it.

Tip:  Make sure you are downloading the official app from EcoCash / Sasai Fintech / Cassava. Check the publisher name before installing.

Step 2 — Register or sign in

  • If you’re a new user, tap “Sign up” and follow the prompts. You’ll need your Zimbabwean mobile number and your national ID details.
  • Existing EcoCash users can log in with their phone number and PIN, then set up the new app.
  • Zimbabweans living abroad can also register — registration has been updated to include non-resident users.
  • Set up biometric login (fingerprint or face) when prompted, for faster and safer access.

Step 3 — Find your way around

Once you’re in, look for the three main tabs along the bottom of the screen: Transact, Chat and Explore. Your wallet balance and quick actions usually sit at the top.

How to use the main features

Send money to someone

  • Open the Transact tab.
  • Tap “Send Money”.
  • Choose the contact (or enter the number).
  • Enter the amount, confirm, and authorise with your PIN or biometric.

Pay at a shop with QR

  1. Open the Transact tab and tap “Scan QR”.
  2. Point the camera at the merchant’s QR code.
  3. Confirm the amount and approve the payment.

Pay a bill or buy airtime/data

  1. Open Transact and choose Pay Bill, Airtime or Data.
  2. Select the biller or network.
  3. Enter the account or phone number, the amount, and confirm.

Chat and pay in the same conversation

  1. Open the Chat tab and start (or open) a conversation.
  2. Tap the payment icon inside the chat.
  3. Choose Send Money, Request Payment, or Split Bill.
  4. Enter the amount, confirm, and the action happens right there in the chat.

Split a bill with friends

  • In the Chat tab, open (or create) a group with everyone involved.
  • Tap the payment icon and choose “Split Bill”.
  • Enter the total amount.
  • The app calculates each person’s share and sends them a prompt in the same chat.
  • Each person taps to settle their portion from their EcoCash wallet.

Request a payment

  • In Chat or Transact, choose “Request Payment”.
  • Pick the contact and enter the amount you’re asking for.
  • Add a short note (e.g. “school transport for Friday”).
  • Send. The other person sees the request and can pay with one tap.

Donate or fundraise

  • Go to the Explore tab.
  • Open the Donate feature.
  • Create a cause: title, short description, target amount.
  • Share the link in chats or on social media so supporters can contribute.

Share Tips or content (for creators)

  • Go to Explore.
  • Choose Tips (for short helpful posts) or create a content post.
  • Write or upload your content and publish.
  • Followers can engage, and supporters can pay you directly through the post.

Why this matters

For most Zimbabweans, EcoCash has been the everyday way to move money for over a decade. The Super App is a bigger shift than just a new look — it changes EcoCash from a wallet you open when you need to pay something into a place where you actually spend time, chat, and discover services.

In practical terms it should mean fewer steps for common tasks (settling a group bill no longer needs a calculator and three separate transfers), more ways for small businesses and creators to earn, and lower data usage compared to jumping between several apps.

EcoCash has also signalled what is coming next: stablecoin-based remittances (so Zimbabweans abroad can send money home more easily), insurance products embedded in the app, and AI features that anticipate your needs over time. Sasai Fintech has already partnered with Circle, a major global stablecoin company, to drive this push.

Safety, costs and good habits

  • Use biometric login (fingerprint or face) and a strong PIN. Never share your PIN.
  • Only download the app from official stores — Google Play or Apple App Store — and check the publisher name.
  • Be wary of strangers in chat asking for money or “verification” details. EcoCash will never ask for your PIN.
  • Standard EcoCash transaction charges still apply to payments and transfers; check the tariff inside the app before confirming larger transactions.
  • If something looks wrong on a payment request, decline first and confirm with the other person separately.

Where to get help

  • In-app help and chat support inside the EcoCash Super App.
  • EcoCash customer service line (dial *151# or contact via the official EcoCash channels).
  • Official EcoCash website: ecocash.co.zw
  • EcoCash and Econet Wireless social media pages for announcements and updates.
