The late Nkulumane MP Desire 'Moyoxide' Moyo

The family of the late Nkulumane legislator, Desire Moyo, has publicly endorsed his widow, Ester Zitha, as she campaigns to replace him in the 20 December by-election, dismissing criticism that her decision violates cultural mourning norms.

Zitha, who was married to the late MP until his death earlier this year, has faced backlash from some community members who argue that it is “too soon” for her to contest for public office. But the Moyo and Zitha families say she sought their permission and has their full support.

Speaking on a digital platform, the late MP’s brother, Mphathi Moyo, said Zitha formally approached both families to request their blessing before entering the race.

“After the death of Desire Moyo, his wife saw it fit to take over the work she carried together with her husband,” he said.

“As the two families brought together by Ester, the Moyo family and the Zitha family, we sat down with our elders, and nothing came out of that meeting that would hinder us from supporting her.”

Moyo said Zitha is exercising her constitutional rights, citing Chapter 4, Section 67 of the Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the freedom to vote and stand for political office.

“We blessed Mrs Moyo to run for the Nkulumane constituency,” he said, adding that both families believe she is capable of continuing her late husband’s work. “We raised our hands on her head, giving her our luck, power and blessings. We trust her, we know her, and she is fit to represent the people of Nkulumane.”

He urged Nkulumane residents to back her on election day.

“May I appeal to the residents of Nkulumane: on 20 December 2025, let’s all go out and vote for Ester Zitha and continue to make Nkulumane proud again,” he said.
