Bulawayo’s Deaf Gunners FC is appealing for financial support to travel to Namibia in April 2026, where they are set to represent Zimbabwe after winning the Deaf Unity Football Tournament held in Bulawayo in August this year.
The team’s chairperson, Assiria Musvingi, said the Deaf Gunners are seeking to raise about US$3,400 to cover transport, accommodation, food, and equipment expenses for the 22-member squad.
“Deaf Gunners FC won the champion trophy in the Deaf Unity Football Tournament. We have to go to Namibia in April next year. However, we now face a challenge in raising funds for transportation and accommodation for our team. We kindly request donations to support us in this endeavor,” said Musvingi.
She said any assistance would make a meaningful impact on helping the team achieve their dream of representing the country.
“Any contribution, big or small, will bring us closer to achieving our goal. We are grateful for your consideration and look forward to your support,” said Musvingi.
Formed in 2009, Deaf Gunners FC was established by a group of deaf players who wanted to create a space where they could play football, develop their skills, and compete confidently.
“Some deaf players wanted a place where they could play soccer, improve their skills, and face new challenges. They saw there were not many chances for deaf people to play sports together, so they decided to start their own team since the government has no organised sports for deaf people,” explained Musvingi.
The team regularly competes in local and regional tournaments across Zimbabwe. But beyond the trophies, Musvingi said their mission is to empower and inspire other deaf people through sport.
“The team’s goal is not only to win games. Many deaf people watch our games in tournaments because they want to feel confident and proud of their abilities, just like hearing people,” she said.
Through football, Deaf Gunners FC also seeks to challenge stereotypes and educate communities about the talents and potential of deaf people.
“The team also teaches the community about deaf people’s talents and helps break down wrong ideas about what deaf people can do,” added Musvingi.
