The City of Bulawayo is facing a major logistical crisis as only two of its seven water bowsers remain operational, severely crippling emergency water delivery across the city.

This was revealed in the latest full council minutes, where the Mayor, Senator David Coltart, and councillors expressed grave concern over the municipality’s inability to meet water demands, especially in high-lying areas and during funerals.

The Director of Water and Sanitation reported that all five non-functional bowsers are grounded due to minor issues, mostly requiring spare parts.

Councillor Felixa Madzana stressed the urgency of the situation, pointing out that most of the repairs were basic and could be done using petty cash.

“This is a serious service delivery issue. Some of these bowsers have been stuck in the workshop for months while residents in areas like Sizinda and Magwegwe West go days without water,” said Councillor Madzana.

The Mayor agreed, attributing the delays to a broken procurement system.

“This is unacceptable. We have pothole patching machines down because of $15 parts and now the same story with water bowsers,” he said.

The crisis is unfolding at a time when dam levels are precariously low and the city remains under water-shedding.
