Maricopa County sends over 2M ballots to early voters ahead of 2024 presidential election

Phoenix, AZ — Maricopa County has mailed over two million ballots to early voters ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Chief Information Officer Nate Young announced.

Young addressed the press at the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office on Thursday as part of the International Reporting Tour titled Road to the White House.

Maricopa County, the third-largest voting jurisdiction in the U.S., has more than 2.6 million registered voters, of which at least 78% are registered as early voters.

“Maricopa County has 2 601 332 registered voters, with 78% of them on the Active Early Voters List,” Young said. “We’ve mailed out 2 004 262 ballots for early voting, and as of today, 1 113 149 ballots have been returned. We expect at least 70 000 voters to cast their ballots in person on Election Day, across 248 voting centers and additional drop boxes around the county.”

Young explained that many early voters hold onto their mail-in ballots until Election Day, when they are still permitted to drop them off.

“People are allowed to submit mail ballots on Election Day itself,” he noted. “In 2020, we had about 300 000 voters drop off ballots on the day. After that, we carefully verify signatures, and if there are issues, we allow a five-day period for the voter to address any discrepancies.”

The 2024 U.S. presidential election, scheduled for November 5, will see former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris among candidates.
