IWD: ZHRC calls for action on economic barriers for women

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has lamented the existing gender disparities with women and girls facing numerous human rights challenges, including limited access to economic opportunities and participation in political processes.
In its statement commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD) under the theme “Invest in women: Accelerate progress,” ZHRC noted that investing in women involves providing opportunities for them to access financial resources, supporting socio-economic activities that advance gender equality, and empowering them to attract economic opportunities such as employment.
They further stated that women’s empowerment and gender equality remain underfunded, with access to finance being a major obstacle as most women lack collateral.
ZHRC noted that investing in women is not only an economic imperative but also a critical enabler in advancing human rights.
“Women’s empowerment and gender equality are fundamental to achieving social justice, economic growth and peace in any society,” the commission said. “By investing in women, the country can unlock their potential as drivers of change and catalysts for progress.”
As part of its mandate, ZHRC said it continues to monitor and investigate violations against women’s rights; monitor and inspect the state of women’s rights in places of detention, refugee camps, and during disasters; and educate, raise awareness, and conduct research on women’s rights and gender equality.
“The Commission also calls for state and non-state actors to intensify efforts for empowerment and investment in women by providing them with opportunities and financial resources for sustainable development,” the commission concluded.
