The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested two high-ranking mining officials for allegedly extorting money from an applicant seeking a mining certificate.
The suspects have been identified as Junior Mudyawabikwa, the Deputy Provincial Mining Director for Mashonaland West, and Robson Farayi Chinanayi, a former Surveyor with the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.
Mudyawabikwa and Chinanayi are expected to appear before the Chinhoyi Magistrate Court today to face charges related to extortion.
According to ZACC, the duo is accused of demanding and receiving USD5000 from the applicant in exchange for facilitating the issuance of the mining certificate. The nature of the facilitation or the specific details surrounding the application remain unclear.
This arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by the Zimbabwean government to combat corruption within its ranks.
In recent months, ZACC has targeted various sectors, including government ministries, local authorities, and state-owned enterprises, in its anti-corruption drive.
