Insiza councillor worries about unregulated mining in Nhlangano

By Promise Dube

Insiza South Ward 5 Councillor Ngobe Masonga expressed concern about the ongoing illegal mining activity in Nhlangano, arguing that formalising it would benefit the entire constituency.

Nhlangano, situated at the confluence of the Insiza and Mzingwane rivers, was cordoned off by the government two years ago due to rampant environmental damage caused by illegal mining, prompting concerns from the Environmental Management Authority (EMA).

Police and EMA officials previously evicted a group of illegal gold miners who had resettled and resumed mining in the area.

However, after their eviction in May 2023, the miners returned, excavating previously covered pits near the Mzingwane River.

In an interview with CITE, Councillor Masonga highlighted the various dangers posed by the unregulated activity, including congestion leading to health risks and potential loss of life due to the lack of proper equipment and safety measures.

“We urge the government to intervene,” he stated, “as there is a real danger of individuals losing their lives due to inadequate materials and unsafe practices.”

He further emphasised the need for formalisation, stating, “With the rainy season approaching, there’s a risk of losing precious resources to the river. However, our primary concern is not the mining itself, but its impact on the entire community. If formalised, the benefits could reach the entire ward, Insiza South Constituency, and Insiza Rural District Council, ultimately improving the lives of our residents.”

Masonga highlighted the health concerns arising from the lack of sanitation facilities despite the crowded conditions. He also expressed concern about the negative impact on education, stating, “Children are dropping out of school due to the instability and chaos, which is detrimental to our community’s well-being.”
