Byo police probe two baby dumping cases

Police in Bulawayo are investigating two cases of baby dumping and are working on locating the two women involved.

Bulawayo acting Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed that the two incidents were recorded yesterday and called on the members of the public to assist with the information.

In one incident the foetus was found floating in the Phekiwe River in Nkulumane and the other incident was recorded in Cowdray Park.

“On July 9, 2023, at around 1200 hours, a male adult aged 54 years was coming from Nkulumane going to his place of residence. When he was crossing the Phekiwe River, he observed a foetus floating on water. He then made a police report,” said Assist. Inspector Msebele.

She said the foetus was ferried to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem.

Msebele added that on the same day around 3 pm, a newly born baby was discovered dumped in Cowdray Park.

“On another case, on the same date and at around 1545 hours, a male adult aged 51 years was walking along a footpath near Raji Modi mall in Cowdray Park when he heard a baby crying from a nearby bush. He proceeded to where the sound of the baby was coming from and discovered a newly born baby girl approximately a few hours old wrapped with a black plastic paper placed in the long grass,” she said.

She said a police report was made and the baby was taken to Mpilo Hospital for further management.

Assist. Inspector Msebele appealed to anyone with information to contact any nearest police station.

“We are urging members of the public to accept the reality that might have befallen them and seek assistance from elders,” she said.
