BCC firefighters injured in bush fire

Bulawayo City Council (BCC) fire truck was badly damaged while two firefighters escaped with minor burns while putting out a raging fire in Bulawayo’s Burnside.

The incident occurred on Thursday at midday.

Bulawayo Acting Chief Fire Officer, Linos Phiri confirmed the incident.

“There was a huge bush fire along starling drive and surrounding areas in Burnside, the fire was threatening to burn one property, firefighters tried to get closer resulting in a change of wind direction, the fire surrounded the fire tender, two officers were slightly scarred by the fire,” said Phiri.

The two firefighters who sustained minor burns were the officer in charge of the tender and the incident commander.

In September last year, a BCC firefighter died after sustaining severe burns while trying to douse a veld fire near the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).
