ZAPU claims official detained by police over planned ‘Gold Mafia’protest
ZAPU National Secretary for Security, Andrew Ndlovu was allegedly arrested and taken to Harare by police, a move the party has described as an intimidating tactic to push back on the planned protest against “Gold Mafias”.
ZAPU National Spokesperson, Msongelwa Ndlovu, told CITE that the Secretary for Security had been arrested over allegations of private property he owns but upon questioning the police wanted to find out the organisers of the planned protest.
ZAPU recently released a statement announcing that they will be holding a protest, Friday, under the banner “Glory to gold” to push the government to act on the people implicated in the Al Jazeera documentary on money laundering and gold smuggling.
“ZAPU National Secretary for Security, Andrew Ndlovu, was arrested at night in Bulawayo and taken to Harare. He has since been released without a charge,” Ndlovu said.
“They had dragged him from Byo to Hre allegedly over a private property he owns. But during questioning, they wanted to know the organizers of the protest against Gold Mafia. Intimidation that won’t work!”
In their statement for the protest, ZAPU called on Zimbabweans to join in a peaceful protest to force the government to act on those implicated in the documentary.
“Following revelations by global media group Al Jazeera about gold smuggling and money laundering by the ruling elite in Zimbabwe and their surrogates, and following our subsequent statement condemning same, ZAPU is calling on every Zimbabwean from all over the world to join a defiance campaign to force our government to act on those implicated and for culprits to resign immediately,” the statement read.
“In pursuit of this, we will be rolling out a peaceful campaign under the theme “glory 2 gold”. Every Zimbabwean, especially those domiciled in the diaspora, will be encouraged to attend to, interact and politely engage individuals and associates known to be beneficiaries and or defenders of the looting of our natural resources.”
The government has since stated that it will order a probe on those implicated in the documentary.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said they had received the report.
