I want to go back to school: Teen in wheelchair appeal

A 16-year-old cancer patient from Majiji who had her leg amputated is appealing for assistance with a wheelchair so that she can go back to school.

Nomalungelo Mpofu last went to school in 2017 when she was doing her grade 5 at Majiji primary school.

Her mother, Thembelihle Mpofu, told CITE that her daughter started having problems with her legs when she was young.

“She started developing problems in her legs in 2011, we took her to St Luke’s District Hospital and they referred us to Mpilo Hospital where they diagnosed her with cancer,” said Mpofu.

Her condition continued to deteriorate until she dropped out of school in 2017.

The situation got worse at the end of 2022 and her left leg had to be amputated.

“We rushed her to St Luke’s Hospital and again they referred us to Mpilo Hospital. The doctors said cancer had advanced and her leg had to be amputated,” she said.

“We had no money for the process and we tried all other avenues until Social Welfare assisted us and the amputation was done.”

She appealed for a wheelchair so that Nomalungelo can be able to move around.

“At the moment, the other leg is no longer functional and we are appealing for a wheelchair so that she can be able to move around,” said Mpofu.

Those willing to assist can contact Nomalungelo’s mother on 0777366522.
