Three Tsholotsho learners arrested after video of brutal beating goes viral

Three Mathula High School learners in Tsholotsho who were filmed assaulting a female learner have been arrested.

The national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the development.

The suspects aged 16 and 17 were filmed assaulting the victim after she allegedly turned down a love proposal from one of the learners.

“That case has been received by the police and we have located the complainant and the witnesses. We have arrested three suspects so far,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.

“One suspect is aged 17 and the other two suspects are aged 16.”

After his love proposal was turned down, the 17-year-old suspect teamed up with his colleagues and decided to waylay the complainant on her way home and then assaulted her.

One of the learners recorded the incident which showed one of the suspects armed with a machete.

A machete is considered a dangerous weapon and the police often warn members of the public from carrying it in public.

“I confirm the police have taken action and we want to warn students against this behaviour, against engaging in acts of bullying, against engaging in acts of criminality whilst at school and also urge parents to ensure that children behave well and they grow up being responsible citizens, “ said Nyathi.
