Classes disrupted following mass hysteria at Plumtree school

Learning at Nyele Primary School in Plumtree was halted on Wednesday afternoon after five learners from different classes fell into hysteria.

Lessons are said to resume (tomorrow) Friday after a parent’s meeting.

Narrating the ordeal to CITE, one parent whose name cannot be published to protect the minor said she received a call yesterday from the school alerting her about the condition of her child who is in grade 6.

“The school called me as my child was also affected. They said one learner on Tuesday was complaining about seeing some creature that was beating her, the creature was only visible to her,” said the concerned mother.

“So today (Wednesday) she was again complaining about the same thing, unfortunately, today other children were also affected. My child was also part of those affected and the school called me, when I got to school, my child was not able to speak, and her body was just cold and stiff. Her jaws had also locked.”

The mother said they tried all they could until her child recovered from the situation.

“We tried by all means we could to assist her until she recovered from that situation. When I asked her what happened she said it started when they were writing their monthly test, she suddenly felt dizzy, stood up and went behind the classroom and sat down. She was then blinded by some light and went into a trance,” she said.

She added that after taking her child home, she fell into a trance for the second time.

Contacted for a comment,  Matabeleland South Provincial Education Director (PED) Beatrice Manjere said she is not aware of the matter while Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Director of Communications and Advocacy, Taungana Ndoro said he is yet to receive the report.
