Residents of Bulawayo are fuming over the increase of bread price from $1 to $1.10 to be effected tomorrow.

They lamented the price hike will worsen their burdened lives.

This comes after Innscor Africa Limited, the company which owns Bakers Inn, announced a 10% bread price hike.

The country has been experiencing price hikes since the July elections.

According to the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ), there has been a 4,2% in the prices of basic commodities jump from June to July 2018.

Sifelani Moyo, a vendor at Egodini said bread prices are increasing but the unemployment rate is still high.

“How can prices increase when we are unemployed? We expect the government to increase prices while creating jobs. We will migrate to rural areas where the cost of living is low,” she said.

Residents said the price hike will affect big families as they will be paying more than $2 a day to buy bread and this will affect her family’s basic living.

An informal trader, Sicelo Ndlovu, who sells clothes, said the prices increases will affect most of his customer`s buying power.

He called on the government to intervene in the situation.

The bread price hike is due to international suppliers of wheat who have reportedly hiked prices by between $30 and $35 per metric tonne in response to rising shipment costs.
