Thirty-two more people succumbed to Covid-19 between the Christmas’ Eve and December 28, as the country continues to register a high number of cases on a daily basis mainly driven by the Omicron variant which spreads faster than previous strains.
Zimbabwe has so far registered a total of 4, 908 deaths out of 205,449 cases recorded since the pandemic hit the country in March 2020.
“Two thousand and ninety-nine (2099) new cases (all local) and 32 deaths [were] reported today (December 28),” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care in its latest update on the pandemic.
“Seven-day rolling average for new cases went down to 1, 397 from 1, 481 yesterday (December 27). Eight of the 18 deaths reported by Harare occurred from 24 December to 27 December 2021 and were not reported.”
Bulawayo reported five deaths yesterday, Manicaland and Mashonaland West three each, Mashonaland East two, Masvingo one while Matabeleland South, Matabeleland North, Mashonaland Central and the Midlands did not report any Covid fatalities.
Meanwhile, police have since announced that New Year’s Eve night vigils and cross over parties have been banned stressing that the country is still under level two lockdown.
