Covid-19 deaths have remained high despite a decrease in new cases, statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care have indicated.
On Wednesday, 25 more people succumbed to the pandemic bringing the total number of people who have died of Covid-19 to 4 181 while 452 new cases bringing the recorded Covid-19 cases to 121 498 cases.
“452 new cases (all local) and 25 deaths reported today. (7 day rolling average* for new cases falls to 506 today from 541 yesterday,” the ministry reported.
The ministry also added that cases in the areas previously designated as hotspots have been declining due to public health control measures being implemented as surveillance continues in the areas.
Of the 25 deaths, Manicaland recorded the highest number of nine deaths while Harare followed with a record of eight Covid-19 deaths.
Bulawayo recorded four deaths, Mashonaland West reported two deaths while Mashonaland East and Matabeleland South both recorded one death each, with other provinces did not record any fatalities.
In terms of new infections, the highest Covid-19 cases were reported in Manicaland which reported 115 new cases, Harare recorded 75 new cases followed by Masvingo which reported 54 new cases.
Mashonaland East province recorded 45 new cases, Mashonaland West recorded 37 new cases, Bulawayo reported 36 cases, Matabeleland South 31 new cases, Midlands 23 cases, Matabeleland North 19 cases while Mashonaland Central reported 17 new cases.
The ministry noted that of the 5 314 tests done yesterday, the positivity rate was 6.3 percent.
They added that 47 809 people received their first dose yesterday bringing cumulative for first dose to 2 193 346 while 43 572 people received their second dose bringing cumulative for the second dose to 1 348 374.
“1 626 new recoveries, national recovery rate stands at 84 percent and active cases go down to 15 840. As of 18 August 2021, Zimbabwe has recorded 121 498 cases, 101 837 recoveries and 4 181 deaths,” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
In addition, they said as of 18 August 2021, there were 437 hospitalised cases, 38 new admissions, 93 asymptomatic, mild to moderate 274, severe 40 and 30 in Intensive Care Units.
