Man arrested for stealing $500k in bank card fraud

Police in Bulawayo have arrested a 56-year-old man for fraud after he allegedly cloned bank cards and withdrew nearly half a million Zimbabwe dollars from his victims.

The suspect has been identified as James Kalulu from Emthunzini area is said to be involved in over 82 cases of card cloning.

When he was arrested he was found in possession of 78 bank cards.

Speaking during a press conference held at Drill Hall, Thursday, Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube made the arrests following a tip-off.

“Police officers in Bulawayo, Commercial Crimes Division (CCD) based at Drill Hall, received a tip-off from members of the public that there was a person who was into card cloning. The information was followed leading to the arrest of James Kalulu, a man-aged 56 years who resides at EMthunzini area but is originally from Hwange,” said Inspector Ncube.

He said Kalulu recently cloned a card belonging to an individual based in Harare, at one of the wholesalers and stole ZWL$12 000.

Inspector Ncube said the suspect is also linked with four other cases where he stole money half a million Zimbabwe dollars.

“Upon search, members of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) recovered 78 cards belonging to different people and we are currently investigating to find out if they have been tampered with,” he said.

“So, we are seating on plus or minus 82 cases that this James Kalulu is involved in. At this point, I would like to applaud members of the public for showing faith and trust in our organisation and working with the police. 

“On another note, I want to appeal to members of the public who might have some discrepancies in their accounts to visit their banks and obtain bank statements, study the accounts, if ever there is something amiss visit CID, CCD department to assist with investigations.”
