ZRP apologises for spelling error

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has moved quickly to replace a banner at Magwegwe police station which had wrongly spelt name following an uproar on social media.

Instead of reading, Magwegwe, the newly erected banner, read Magwegew, much to the disdain of social media users.

They accused the police of denigrating the Ndebele language.

In a statement, Bulawayo Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele apologised to members of the public for the mishap, citing that once the mistake was noticed, the signpost was immediately taken down and the spelling was corrected.

Asst Insp Msebele dispelled the conception that the signpost had been given to people with no knowledge of the Ndebele language.

The corrected banner

“Police in Bulawayo would like to advise members of the public that the spelling error which resulted in the name of Magwegwe Police station being misspelt has since been rectified. This was a genuine error by one of our trusted local business man who willingly volunteered to print a banner for the police,” she said.

“The error was discovered during the erection of the banner and immediately removed and corrected. Some members of the public had already taken some pictures and circulated them. We sincerely apologise for an inconvenience caused and we would like to appreciate our local business people for the continuous support.”
