Forty-six new firefighters from 21 local authorities in Zimbabwe have successfully completed their training under Operation Florian, a UK-based firefighting charity.
The training was conducted in Bulawayo.
The firefighters received their certificates during a pass-out parade held by Bulawayo City Council (BCC) on Friday at Famona Fire Station.
Operation Florian has been training local firefighters in Zimbabwe for the past 12 years, aiming to enhance fire safety and emergency response in communities worldwide. The programme equips local firefighters with essential skills and knowledge while donating firefighting equipment.
This year, the charity donated two additional fire trucks and other equipment, which is expected to arrive in Bulawayo soon.
Speaking at the ceremony, Acting Town Clerk Sikhangele Zhou said the programme initially recruited 50 officers. However, two dropped out, while two others deferred after falling pregnant.
โWe have 21 local authorities participating in this training. Each sent two representatives, but Harare had the highest number, with eight trainees,โ she said.
โThe programme includes both theoretical training and on-the-job experience. For the past 12 years, we have successfully trained firefighters, not only for Bulawayo but for other parts of the country as well.โ
Zhou added that Botswana was expected to send participants, but delays in processing paperwork prevented their involvement. She expressed hope that they would join future intakes.
Skills drain and international recognition
Through Operation Florian, BCC has enhanced its capacity with highly skilled personnel. However, Zhou noted that many trained officers leave Zimbabwe for jobs in the Middle East and the United States.
โOf course, it is a brain drain for us, but at the same time, it shows we are producing firefighters whose skills attract international recognition,โ she said.
She added that the Ministry of Local Government had commended BCC for its well-equipped fire stations and commitment to delivering high-quality firefighting services.
