Traditional leaders can solve Gukurahundi issue -Charumbira
President of the Chiefs Council Fortune Charumbira has demanded that traditional leaders be given the mandate to solve the emotive Gukurahundi issue to finality.
President of the Chiefs Council Fortune Charumbira has demanded that traditional leaders be given the mandate to solve the emotive Gukurahundi issue to finality.
Speaking at the Zanu PF annual conference on Friday, Charumbira said only chiefs can bring closure to the matter.
He said earlier attempts to solve the Gukurahundi issue from the time of former President Robert Mugabe yielded nothing and there was less likelihood that the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission would do a better job than chiefs.
Charumbira also torched a storm when he charged that traditional leaders support Zanu PF challenging anyone offended by the stance to take him to court.
Recently Ntabazinduna Chief Nhlanhla Ndiweni, advised Fortune Charumbira, to stay away from discussing Gukurahundi as the matter has potential to divide chiefs.
“Let’s just say the chiefs’ council takes it on board, it has no terms of reference, it cannot handle Gukurahundi and does not know where to go with it but what will happen is the matter will divide the chiefs’ council. We are opening a Pandora’s Box whereby the national chiefs council can be destroyed by this issue. My advice to Charumbira is he needs to step aside and not put the chief councils in an impossible position,” said Ndiweni.
