25 years on, EducationUSA strengthens Zimbabwe-US academic ties
The U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe is marking the 25th anniversary of its EducationUSA program with a 6.6 percent rise in Zimbabwean students studying in the United States compared to last year.
According to the 2024 Open Doors Report by the Institute of International Education, 1 907 Zimbabwean students are currently enrolled in U.S. institutions for the 2023-2024 academic year, reflecting a growing interest in American higher education.
Graduate student enrollment saw the most significant rise, with a 15% increase, while undergraduate students make up the largest group at 49%, followed by graduate students (32%), those in optional practical training (18%), and non-degree program participants (1%).
The EducationUSA program, which supports high-achieving, low-income students with application and travel-related costs, has been pivotal in expanding access to U.S. education.
In a statement released Monday, the Embassy attributed the growing numbers to Zimbabweans’ strong interest in academic opportunities abroad, noting the deepening ties between the two nations.
Beyond EducationUSA, the Embassy also facilitates a range of fully funded exchange programs, enabling more than 100 Zimbabweans last year to participate in academic and professional opportunities in the United States.
